The normative future, circa 1984

“[William] Gibson’s powerful vision [in Neuromancer] provided … the imaginal public sphere and refigured discursive community that established the grounding for the possibility of a new kind of social interaction.”
– A.R. Stone, quoted by Nicolas Nova.
I am intrigued by the notion of a normative future shared by a particular discursive community. And Gibson, along with Bruce Sterling, Neal Stephenson, and Philip K. Dick (via Ridley Scott) — to sample several generations of science fiction authors – undoubtedly shaped the technical imaginations of many people even beyond 1980s Silicon Valley.
