I wonder what Rosie Perera would make of practices that involveĀ preparing a home with high technology to enable sabbathkeeping?

I will have to read that when I get back from Italy. Thanks for the tip. It reminds me of the Sabbath elevator they had in the hotel where I stayed in Jerusalem a few years ago. There were two elevators, one normal (for tourists), and one for Sabbath keepers, which ran continuously up and down and stopped on every floor, so you didn’t have to push any buttons. Seems to me they are missing the spirit of Sabbath with all those regulations about precisely what little tiny bit of exertion constitutes “work” and what doesn’t. Getting up out of bed in the morning is more work (in terms of ergs) than pushing an elevator button. And think of all the extra work they are creating for the poor schleps(*) who make elevators and the like. [(*) I just learned about this usage of the word from William Safire's column in today's International Herald Tribune]
